lipstick- Revlon super lustrous lipstick! As per environmental working groups
data base lipsticks and lip gels are loaded with carcinogenic chemicals and
heavy metals.
Researchers from university of California, Berkley tested 32
lipsticks and lip glosses used by young females in California youth program.
They concluded the following bitter truths.
Application of lipstick spreads 10mgs of products across a woman’s
lips and most of it will be ingested. Around 24mg of products are ingested on
an average use and 87mg for frequent users. These products comprises mainly of heavy
metals (lead, aluminum, chromium, cadmium etc.), Methyl paraben, propyl
paraben, retinol palmitate and Tocopherol acetate.
The cosmetic database labels these chemicals as "High
Hazard"; these products disrupt endocrine system, reproductive system along
with carcinogenic induction effect. Retinol
palmitate (Vitamin A) is highly toxic to pregnant women, including the growing fetus
causing developmental anomalies.
Unfortunately FDA does not limit the heavy metals levels in
these additives used in lipsticks.
Over a time, these heavy metals accumulate in the body specifically
in central nervous system, kidney and reproductive systems. Specific Cancer (stomach
and bladder) are noted with arsenic and chromium.
We think we are safe by using natural or organic lipstick, that’s
not completely true. As per Regulation and Labelling nomenclature even they are
found to have heavy metals in their coloring additives.
Lead (parts per
million) in different brands
Wow. Who knew lipstick could contain so many chemicals. Based on the parabens or heavy metals it seems wise to stay away from it. It's also interesting how the color has different characteristics of metals and in particular lead. I use Burt's bees mostly, and even though I consider that to be safe, I better check it out.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post
I too found makeup products to be of most shock with regards to their chemical components. The ingredients of lipstick are very alarming especially since lipstick is commonly ingested as we eat, drink, or licking our lips. The metals of different colors was also interesting to learn about leaving me wondering about my chap stick and lip-glosses.
