“Who is Rachel Carson of our day?”

After listening to Jane Hoolihan’s lecture posted in the canvas, it provoked my insight about the toxic environment that we live in!  I realized the truth that, every day we are compromising our lives to get blended with toxins and chemicals in the name of modernization. Her speech kind of opened my thought process to step up for action to protect myself from these chemicals which are part of every personal item (shampoo, moisturizer etc...).

Female reproductive health and related health issues are my personal choice of interest, I could get tons and tons of information’s and etiologies related to infertility, endocrine related issues.

My husband and relatives were also surprised after listening to her video.  I feel Jane Hoolihan’s Skin deep data base is a great source of information for teens to choose their personal care items.

So, I considered Jane Hoolihan as Rachel Carson of our day.  Thanks to professor Sattler for send this video.

Presently I am reading “Generations at Risk – Reproductive health and environment” by authors Ted Schettler, Gina Solomon and Maria Valenti. The book describes the toxicity of chemicals in our homes, communities and workplaces and their effect on reproductive health and development. The Authors have discussed a comprehensive review of metals, organic solvents, pesticides and endocrine disrupters in our food, air and water and the dangers to human reproductive physiology caused by exposure even in small quantities. We can link the environmental educators, policy advocates and public health professionals clearly for a better action steps.  I would love to add all these three authors in my champions list as well.

  1. Sounds like a great book Yogamba! Another area that we can be aware of and in turn try and create change in this realm. There are really so many champions and many of them are on our reading list for this class. I just finished Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan and I encourage you to read that as well. Cooking and food has become so toxic in this country and I know it is a far different picture in other places around the world. There is also a great series called "Cooked" based on a novel he wrote that you might find interesting as well.
    Thanks for your post!

  2. Yogamba, I too found Jane Hoolihan's work as very influential and innovative. I have been recommending her Skin Deep database to so many people because I feel that it is such a convenient way to increase your awareness about what you may be exposing your body or your family's bodies. I also find the authors of environmental health literature to be quite "Rachel Carson" esc. They write about truths we should not be ignoring. I look forward to reading that book in the near future!
